Email Fraud Prevention Tips
It is important to protect against all types of cyber fraud, including email fraud. Email is an inexpensive and popular method for distributing fraudulent messages to potential victims. According to the U.S. Secret Service, hundreds of millions of dollars are lost annually through email scams, and they expect that number to increase.
These fraudulent communications generally appear to be official notices from law firms, the IRS or package delivery services that require the user to perform an action such as clicking on a link or opening an attachment for further information or instructions. They typically, but not always, contain grammatical errors, spelling errors and other inconsistencies, such as being oddly worded. The link or attachment is designed to collect information to be used for fraudulent purposes, or to install viruses or malware.
Do not share sensitive information via email. Community Bank will never contact you on an unsolicited basis to request personal information or electronic banking credentials. If you receive an unscheduled or unsolicited email claiming to be from Community Bank, contact us immediately at 708-660-1000, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
These are a few examples of the potential characteristics of fraudulent emails:
- An unexpected communication, not someone with whom you typically communicate
- Official sounding and likely urgent in nature
- Requires clicking a link or opening an attachment for more information or instructions
- Often contains a legitimate web site link or other factual information about the company or agency referenced
If you receive an email that has any of these characteristics:
- Do not open any attachments or click on any links in the email
- Do not forward the suspicious email or take any other action
- Delete the email and empty your email trash folder
To help guard against emails with potentially dangerous attachments, be sure to have the latest virus protection software installed on your computer and keep it updated. And remember, Community Bank will never ask you for your private information in an email.
